Urban heat island features of southeast Australian towns

چکیده

The purpose of this investigation was to examine the current urban heat island (UHI) effect in a number of southeast Australian towns and to provide discussion on its potential impact on the historical temperature record. High-quality long-term historical temperature data are fundamental in the examination of climate change. Observational datasets are essential for the monitoring of climate and the analysis of past trends, and the validation of climate models. It is therefore necessary to account for any possible bias in the record due to non-climatic influences. Changes affecting the record, such as site moves and instrument modifications, have been addressed on both regional (e.g. Easterling and Peterson 1994; Plummer et al. 1995) and global (Jones et al. 1986; Karl and Williams 1987) scales. A Comprehensive Statistical Study on Daytime Surface Urban Heat Island during Summer in Urban Areas, Case Study: Cairo and Its New Towns

Surface urban heat island (SUHI) is defined as the elevated land surface temperature (LST) in urban area in comparison with non-urban areas, and it can influence the energy consumption, comfort and health of urban residents. In this study, the existence of daytime SUHI, in Cairo and its new towns during the summer, is investigated using three different approaches; (1) utilization of pre-urbaniz...

The Investigation of Variability of Heat Island Hazard According to Land Use and Land Cover Changesin Esfahan

Abstract Urban heat island (UHI) is one of the environmental phenomenon which has made difficult environmental conditions for citizen. This study aims to evaluate the spatial and locational variability of Esfahan urban heat island according to the role of land use. Thus an area about 190.2 square kilometers (km2) in Esfahan, as the microclimate, was studied. In order to analyze the relations...

Including the urban heat island in spatial heat health risk assessment strategies: a case study for Birmingham, UK

BACKGROUND Heatwaves present a significant health risk and the hazard is likely to escalate with the increased future temperatures presently predicted by climate change models. The impact of heatwaves is often felt strongest in towns and cities where populations are concentrated and where the climate is often unintentionally modified to produce an urban heat island effect; where urban areas can...

The Dynamical Linkage of Atmospheric Blocking to Drought, Heatwave and Urban Heat Island in Southeastern US: A Multi-Scale Case Study

Atmospheric blocking is a long standing structure stalled in the mid-troposphere which is often associated with extreme weather events such as droughts, heatwaves, flood and cold air outbreak. A striking atmospheric blocking is identified to persist over the US during 13–17 August 2007, exacerbating the existing drought over the Southeastern US. This pronounced blocking event not only intensifi...
